Position Summary

While working as an signage estimator, you will be tasked with fulfilling orders and performing tasks related to estimating, collecting and analyzing data in order to estimate the time, money, materials, and labor required to manufacture signage projects. You will use a specialized computer software program to build jobs and receive estimates. You will use information such as production time, material needs, and equipment and labor expenses to estimate a project's profit margin. Additionally, you will contact vendors to estimate the cost of sending the job to another company for production. The estimator provides outstanding customer service to internal and external customers as they examine specifications and samples and assist in planning the production process. The person in this position assists with performing the operational functions of the department, providing excellent customer service and ensuring an accurate estimate.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Consult with personnel in the sales department to discuss specifications and formulate estimates
  • Utilize specialized computer software to enter job information and receive an accurate estimate
  • Contact vendors to acquire pricing alternatives and coordinate outsource projects by pricing and coordinating with outsourcers
  • Format and create a detailed proposal for a manager's consideration
  • Following a manager's review, you will return the estimate to the sales department for distribution to the customer
  • Revise estimates as needed due to specific changes in the order
  • May assist with analyzing and updating estimate standards
  • Review material and labor requirements to decide whether it is more cost-effective to produce or purchase components
  • Communicate with supervisors, peers, or subordinates to receive feedback
  • Coordinate with managers to meet deadlines and identify new projects
  • Enter information into the computer in order to keep track of jobs and assignments

Nonessential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Occasionally coordinate with members of the production team while preparing an estimate  
  • Work on job assignments in other departments as instructed

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) but no prior experience or training is required

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret important documents such as work orders and estimate documents

Ability to speak effectively with co-workers, managers, and customers

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts using decimals and fractions

Mathematical operations applied to calculating price is critical

Reasoning Ability

Ability to use judgment and critical thinking to analyze estimates is crucial

Computer Skills

Performing this job successfully requires that an individual have a solid understanding of computers, data entry, and interpretation of results obtained

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Physical demands
    • While performing the duties of this job, one is regularly required to sit and use a computer to perform their responsibilities. Additionally, the associate may be required to walk infrequently to meet with other departments. Talking and listening are crucial as well, as customers and colleagues may lend and seek advice on estimates. The associate may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. 
  • Work environment
    • While performing the duties of this job, the associate is regularly exposed to noise typical of an office environment. Noises such as printers, computers, and telephones are typically heard.
