Offset Press Operator

Position Summary

While working in production, specifically the press room, you will be tasked with fulfilling orders and performing tasks related to printing customer orders from an offset press. You will be responsible for operating the offset press in order to produce a high quality product for the customer. Additionally, you will load, maintain, and occasionally repair the presses in order to ensure proper quality and a timely delivery to finishing. The person in this position assists with performing the operational functions of the department, meeting both quality and quantity requirements.


While working as a pressman, one may be required to operate different presses depending upon the amount of staff present, the amount of work needed to be done, or other extraneous factors. For that reason, in addition to the "Essential Duties and Responsibilities" listed below, there are other duties that are specific to only certain presses, also listed below.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate presses
  • Select and insert paper into the press for printing
  • Frequently check the printed project for defects or faults to ensure the highest quality product possible
  • Report possible problems to the Output Manager
  • Run make-ready before running the job to ensure the press is set up correctly
  • Check the printed color against a color sample and/or Pantone guide to ensure correct printing
  • Replenish the ink and blankets as needed
  • Maintain a proper balance between ink and water to make certain the proper shade of ink is applied
  • Select ink color and position ink on the rollers to ensure the plate is coated
  • Wash Up the press as needed
  • Make sure that the quality is consistent, samples match, and any issues or concerns are flagged
  • Perform basic maintenance duties to the machine as needed in order to keep it running smoothly
  • Sign off on work orders to ensure that detailed records are kept
  • Communicate with supervisors, peers, or subordinates to receive feedback
  • Coordinate with managers to meet deadlines and identify new projects

True Offset Press Two or Four Color

  • Essential responsibilities
    • Receive printing plates from Prepress
    • Install printing plates with a wrench and tighten clamps
    • Ensure the water system is kept functional to cool down the presses

Digital Press Four Color Offset Press (CMYK)

  • Essential responsibilities
    • Access plates via email folder on press computer
    • Ensure that the machine is kept at a certain temperature to prevent over heating
    • Navigate the computer screen to open, close, and run jobs
    • Give the computer a command to clean the blankets
    • Adjust the color volume if a job needs to be printed in a more or less vibrant color
    • Use built in color scanner to ensure the printed color matches work order specifications
    • Replace blanket wash fluid

True Offset Press Two Color Thermo Attachment

  • Essential responsibilities
    • Inspect customer products to ensure that raised printing is high quality
    • Receive printing plates from Prepress
    • Install printing plates with a wrench and tighten clamps
    • Ensure the water system is kept functional to cool down the presses

Education and/or Experience

Certificate from a vocational or technical school; at least 3-4 years related on-the-job experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret important documents, especially work orders, procedure manuals, and instructions

Ability to speak effectively with co-workers and managers

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add and subtract numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's

Reasoning Ability

Ability to understand and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form

Computer Skills

Performing this job successfully requires that an individual have a basic understanding of computers and data entry

Other Qualifications

  • Must be able to work with moving parts on all equipment
  • Capable of understanding work order instructions
  • In depth knowledge of the mechanics and press capabilities
  • The ability to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Physical demands
    • While performing the duties of this job, one is regularly required to stand and use hands to handle letters, envelopes, and packages, and operate controls. Additionally, reaching with hands and arms is regularly required. Talking and listening is crucial as well. The associate is regularly required to walk and stoop. The associate must occasionally lift and /or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision (possessing clear vision at 20 inches or less), color vision (ability to distinguish colors), depth-perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Work environment
    • While performing the duties of this job, the associate is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. Additionally, the noise level in the work environment is loud and usually consists of heavy machinery and presses operating. Also, because of the large amounts of ink being used, fumes and airborne particles are often in the air in small quantities. Finally, some of the presses expose the associate to levels of intense heat and vibration.
